Ca' Gottardi is one of a new generation of small hotels that dusts off traditional Venetian style and mixes in some contemporary design. The entrance, on the second floor of a Renaissance palace, is done in white marble and glass, making a graceful contrast to the Murano chandeliers and wall brocades of the guest rooms. Bathrooms are large and modern, and a rich breakfast is served in a salon that's pleasantly full of light. Location is another plus: it's just off the Grand Canal, near the Ca' d'Oro and across the canal from the Rialto markets.

Ca'Gottardi mixes contemporary with old Venice, in a very useful location. It only has a few rooms and your room will be small (as all in Venice are), with an ultramodern but tight bathroom. Elegant style on very small scale. One or the other owner is usually at the desk, very friendly and helpful.
Breakfast is served in the "lobby" (obviously once a salon of some sort), with lovely windows over the canal. No elevator to first floor, but they'll help you with bags. Located a decent distance from the San Marco touristic gridlock, but convenient to the Ca d'Oro vaporetto stop, along a sort of main-drag with shops and restaurants -- but quiet at night. The canal it's next to is one that cuts across from Grand Canal to the main lagoon, so if you want a water taxi to/from the airport, it's a straight shot. Highly recommend it.
