Chorus Churches

Fodor's Review:

In 1997 a group of parish priests founded a nonprofit organization to raise money for maintenance and protection of fifteen of Venice's finest churches -- Santa Maria del Giglio, Santo Stefano, Santa Maria Formosa, Santa Maria dei Miracoli, Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, San Polo, San Giacomo dell'Orio, San Stae, Sant'Alvise, Madonna dell'Orto, San Pietro di Castello, SS. Redentore, San Sebastiano, Gesuati, and San Giovanni Elemosinario. Known as the Chorus Churches, they're open to visitors all day except Sunday mornings. There's usually someone to provide information and a free leaflet (available in English), and postcards and booklets are on sale. Single church entry costs EUR 2.50, or you can buy a EUR 9 Chorus pass that allows you one admission to each church and is good for a year. The pass includes use of audio guides except in Basilica dei Frari, where guides cost EUR 1.60. The artwork in Chorus churches is labeled, and the staff can show you where to switch on special lighting for certain paintings.
