Fodor's Review:

Legend says a church was founded here in the 5th century by some of the lagoon's earliest refugees, but this building was probably constructed in the 11th and 12th centuries, the same time as the neighboring market. Doges traditionally paid visits here every Good Friday. Across from the church's front door is a squat marble pedestal where public announcements were read. Beneath the steps to the pedestal stands what people have long referred to as the Rialto gobbo (hunchback); the figure is now thought to represent a working man, symbolically bent from the weight of the steps. The conspicuous 24-hour clock has had a horrible reputation for timekeeping since it was installed -- it hasn't worked for years. Behind the church is a cross-shaped inscription that entreats merchants to be honest in law, exact in weights and measures, and faithful in contracts. The church is rarely open except for evening concerts.
