Come to this casual spot in the heart of the Rialto Market in a 15th-century loggia for a change from standard Venetian food. Yes, fish is on the menu, and some of the dishes are Venice classics; but highlights such as mousse di gamberoni con salsa di avocado (shrimp mousse with an avocado sauce) and Sicilian-style sarde incinte (stuffed, or "pregnant," sardines) are far from typical fare, though portions can be small. The wine list and cheese plate are both divine. There are tables upstairs in a carefully restored room with a partial view of the Grand Canal; when it's warm you can sit outdoors and get the full canal view.

And I thought it was a secret! Bancogiro is my all time favorite spot in Venice to sit and enjoy a glass of vino in the evening while watching the gondolas glide slowly by on the Grand Canal. It can be crowded with locals later in the evening, so get there early. Their cheese and honey plate is to die for.
