San Polo

San Polo has two major sites, Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, as well as some worthwhile but lesser-known churches. Food shops abound in the area surrounding the western end of the Rialto Bridge, which connects San Polo with San Marco. You can shop for fruits and vegetables, and buy fish along with the Venetians at the Rialto Market at the San Polo end of the bridge. Visitors to Venice tend to forget that the city is not only a tourist center; it is also a university town: the Università Ca’ Foscari is centered in San Polo and has more than 17,000 students. Its administrative center, Ca’ Foscari, is located in San Polo on the Grand Canal.
