Islands of the Lagoon
A trip to Murano, home to Venice's glass-blowing industry, will introduce you to this centuries-old art by means of a well-arranged glass museum and the many free demonstrations that the smaller furnaces use to draw tourists inside their showrooms. Burano looks a bit like a toy town -- the low fishermen's houses are traditionally painted with the brightest colors possible to make them visible even in the thickest of the lagoon's fogs. The Museo del Merletto contains paragons of antique lace made with threads as fine as cobwebs. The Lido serves as Venice's fashionable beach resort.
