Oltre il Giardino–Casaifrari
Fondamenta Contarini, San Polo 2542, Venice, Veneto, 30125, Italy
It's easy to overlook—and it can be a challenge to find—this secluded palazzo, sheltered as it is behind a brick wall just over the bridge from the Frari church, but the search is well worth it: airy, individually decorated guest rooms face a large garden, an oasis of peace (especially in high season). The prevalent white-and-pastel color scheme gives an understated, nearly minimalist, touch to the decor, creating a fresh and relaxed ambience rare in Venice, although antiques and period pieces complement the contemporary furnishings. The owner's service and professional attention is as conscientious as the renovation. As for pedigree, the house was once the residence of Alma Mahler, one of the most famous femmes fatales of the early 20th century (she lived in the house in the 1920s, while she was married to author Franz Werfel).

- walled garden
- a beautiful, but not particularly Venetian, ambience
