$$$$, Santa Croce
Fodor's Review:
This Renaissance-era red-stucco and stone building was home to the families of several aristocratic families before being purchased by the Venetian painter Giacomo Favretto (1849-87). The spacious portego preserves the original 20-foot beamed ceiling, from which hang two huge Murano chandeliers fit for a royal ballroom; old tapestries arranged high on the walls add glamour and a medieval feel. All rooms are furnished with either genuine antiques or well-made replicas. Nearly every window frames a great view; those facing the Grand Canal open on the lacy facade of the Ca' d'Oro, which at sunset picks up magic shades of pink.
