The only Venetian abbey turned into a hotel, the Abbazia is not recognizable as such from the outside. The guest rooms are in the former convent -- a low, white stucco structure with no exposed brick or Gothic windows. Numerous details survive from the building's religious past: tiny wooden pulpits hang on the walls, and holy-water bowls await around many corners. Brass chandeliers befit the austerity of the place, as does the cream-white and beige decor of the rooms (considerably larger than monks' cells), although some touches of gaudy colors are found in the tapestries and couches.

Best of our trip

Venice was the third city on our family trip (6 ages 26 to 82)to Italy and the Abbazia was the best of our hotels!
Great location for those arriving by train. Less than a block from the train station, made it easy without hiring porters to move bags, etc. Look for the small walkway just beyond the Scalzi church and the Scalzi bridge.
The desk staff is wonderful and very helpful. The hotel is quiet (except for the 7:15AM and 8:15AM church bells) and the rooms are individually decorated.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

A Travelers Delight!

Stayed at the Abbazia in late August family of 4. If you are arriving by train it is right next to the station..like around the corner..yet you never hear the trains! We had a huge room with a walk-in-closet that held all 6 pieces of luggage out of the way at the entrance of the room. The hotel is right in the center of the transportation hub district with a vaporetto station right out front. It is also easy walking distance to all bus lines including busses to the airport. The staff was incredible, very friendly, full of advise and ideas for sight-seeing. Here is a suggestion for a day-trip...take the "free" water taxi arranged at the front desk to Murano (glass factories..well worth it...then the vaporetto to Burano for lace...then the large ferry back to St. Marks Square. You will see so much of Venice during this day trip and be able to relax on the ferry. The trip to Lido Beach was fun too..you can take the vaporetto right out front of the hotel. Lido is REALLY cool...if you are offended by topless don't go there! The breakfast service at the Abbazia is great and again the staff goes out of their way to help....A Great Family Hotel!!
