$$$, San Polo
Fodor's Review:
At the end of the 13th century this building housed foreign merchants selling their wares at the Rialto, and the painter Vittore Carpaccio depicted it in his 1494 Miracle of the Cross (on view at the Accademia). Now it's decorated in 18th-century Venetian style and run with care by a Venetian family. Rooms (two with views of the Grand Canal) are done in red-and-gold brocade; there's also a small but inviting breakfast room. Two rooms comfortably sleep four, making them good choices for families. All rooms have coffee- and tea-making facilities, an uncommon feature for Italy. Be warned that the stairs are steep, the hotel is on the fourth and fifth floors, and there's no elevator.
