Coffee, which for centuries had been a popular drink throughout countries to the East, may have first arrived in Europe aboard Venetian cargo ships. Merchants were regularly importing beans in the early 1600s, and coffee shops opened in Venice, Paris, and Vienna shortly thereafter. Since Caffè Florian, located in the Procuratie Nuove, brewed its first cup, it has served the likes of Casanova, Dickens, and Proust. It's Venice's oldest café, continuously open since 1720 (though you'll find it closed on Wednesday in winter). Counter seating is less expensive than taking a table, especially when there's live music.
