Fondaco dei Turchi

Castles / Palaces, Santa Croce

Fodor's Review:

Built in 1225 by an immigrant from Pesaro, this palace was so beautiful that in 1381 it was bought by the republic. They loaned it to the Duke of Ferrara, from whom it was periodically confiscated in conflicts, and at the same time used it as a hotel for visiting emissaries. Ownership passed through a number of families, until in 1621 it was leased to Turkish merchants, who used it as a warehouse and residence, even installing a mosque and bathhouse.

From the Grand Canal, Fondaco dei Turchi is striking, with its pink and white marble facade and crenellated top. It was the original 19th-century home of Museo Correr but now contains the city's Museo di Storia Naturale (Museum of Natural History). It has collections of flora and fauna native to the lagoon and the skeletons of two prehistoric reptiles. Although some parts of the building are still closed for renovation, the museum has recently reopened the dinosaur exhibit and has temporary exhibitions as well.
