A reasonably priced trattoria among sandwich shops and tourist traps, Rivetta is a safe bet for a bite to eat near Piazza San Marco. Crowded and narrow, it's redeemed by fast service and a solid selection at the counter: try insalata di mare (seafood salad) and un bianco (a glass of house white wine). If you take a seat, consider the pasticcio (fish lasagna) pasta special. If you have recently taken a gondola ride, there's a fair chance you will run into your gondolier -- the ultimate stamp of value and quality. Those who park at the nearby Ponte della Canonica, San Zaccaria, and Bacino di San Marco are regulars here.

Worth the wait

Every guide book and travel web site that I visited while planning our March trip to Venice, recommended Trattoria Rivetta. Our table for 6 included a local couple from Venice, a young couple from Italy, and us. The atmosphere was lively; our waiter was enthusiastic; the service was prompt, if a bit erratic; and the food was tasty. The cuttlefish in its own ink did look rather unattractive when it arrived, but it was delicious and rich. Line-ups extended out the door, even before 20:00, but they do accept reservations.

After 15 years we came back to this lovely Trattoria. It still had the atmosphere we remembered and so was the fine quality of service and food. We were with friends and tried the complete menu! It was a real treat! Nice waiters and a relaxed atmosphere. Go there and take the queue for granted.
