There's been a church on this island since the late 8th century, with a Benedictine monastery added in the 10th century. The present neoclassical church of red brick and white marble was begun in 1566 by Palladio, and it displays his architectural hallmarks of geometric harmony and affinity for classical antiquity. Inside, it's refreshingly airy and simply decorated. The Last Supper and The Gathering of Manna, two of Tintoretto's later works, line the chancel. Right of the entrance hangs Adoration of the Shepherds by Jacopo Bassano (1517-92); his portrayal of country life and use of earth-tone colors show the influence of his upbringing in the foothills of Bassano del Grappa. Ask the monks to see Carpaccio's George and Dragon; it hangs in a private room, but they're happy to escort you if they have time. Take the elevator to the top of the campanile for some of the finest views in town.
