Fodor's Review:

The Excelsior's imposing, Moorish-style building with its green cupolas and inner courtyard comes complete with potted lemon trees and fountains; the feel is decidedly southern Mediterranean. No longer a haunt of the noble and famous of the dolce vita days (except during the Biennale), the hotel nonetheless offers the same panache, luxury, and space as ever. Rooms are tastefully modern, done in bright colors, and face either the inner garden or the beach below. A shuttle boat between the hotel and San Zaccaria runs every half hour.

Overrated and tacky

I don't get the appeal of this hotel. Someone told us that this hotel is one of the top 50 in the world and I find that impossible to believe. The good: The beds, Westin's heavenly beds have found their way to Italy. The bad: The distance from the hotel to the mainland of Venice was inconvient. The beach wasn't very nice with sand/dirt as it's covering. However, tons or cool seashells. The pool looked worn and semi-dirty and very, very, very cold! The ugly: The hotel rooms. Maybe I am missing something but this is the gaudiest place I've ever seen. I don't even know how to describe the rooms other than UGLY. Search their website for a room picture and you'll see what I mean. Some of the snootiest people we encountered in all of Italy. (Mostly the guests). Stay on the mainland of Venice or only consider here if you'll be in Venice for a long time and it will be very hot because it is not worth the trouble for the pool and beach.
