Antica Trattoria San Lorenzo
Antica Trattoria San Lorenzo Review
Brick vaults are not the only distinguishing feature of this small restaurant next to the Duomo, as both the food and the service are outstanding. Particular attention is paid to adapting traditional Umbrian cuisine to the modern palate. There's also a nice variety of seafood dishes on the menu. The trenette alla farina di noce con pesce di mare (flat noodles made with walnut flour topped with fresh fish) is a real treat.

I visited the Antica Trattoria on a Wednesday lunchtime. I had skipped the morning session of the conference I was attending and wanted to sample some nice Umbrian food in a beautiful setting. The place may have the potential to be atmospheric but there was no other customer but me at that time, which did not help to create an ambiance. Moreover, the kitchen had its own radio and I had to simultaneously listen to the music in the main room and the kitchen's line.
The food:
I has a tartare as a starter followed by a pasta dish. The tartare was terrible; fish was cut in an absolutely unprofessional way, with big chunks of salmon and another unidentified species. Tasteless and very very poorly executed. Pasta was significantly better prepared but lacked any interesting flavours. I find the whole experience terribly pretentious and lacking both quality ingredients and culinary skill. This is even more so when taking into account the prices this restaurant commands. I was charged 5 € for the most unremarkable pane and 4 € for a bottle of water I did not request. The only remarkable item was a fantastic house wine at a very reasonable 5 euros. Coffee was appalling, which is unforgivable in Italy.
I am very sorry to have to write such a bad review for a family run business but you cannot charge this type of prices for such a mediocre performance. A very dissatisfying experience.
