The forested hills of Umbria and the Marches are marked by rich fall colors and an explosion of greenery in spring, making those two seasons prime visiting time. Fall and winter are longer and colder here than in nearby Rome; you'll want to have warm clothes with you as early as October and as late as April. The consolation is that winter is the best season for the region's cuisine: January to April is truffle season in Norcia and Spoleto, and October to December brings a bounty of fresh local mushrooms. Summer, when the top of Monte Subasio and the Piano Grande are blanketed with wildflowers, is an excellent time for a hiking trip.
