Preserved ancient forests and barren rocky peaks create dramatic scenery in the Parco Naturale delle Alpi Apuane (Natural Park of the Apuane Alps), a national park that encompasses several towns. Its highest peak, Monte Pisanino, rises more than 6,000 feet, and towers over an artificial lake, Lago di Vagli, which covers the submerged village of Fabbricca. The tiny stone villages of Vagli di Sotto and Vagli di Sopra sit alongside the lake. Plan on a half or full day of hiking in the park. Remember to wear comfortable sports shoes or hiking boots and bring plenty of drinking water. A two-lane winding road through the park (SP13) connects Castelnuovo di Garfagnana to the sea. To get to Vagli di Sotto and Vagli di Sopra, go north of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana on SR445 to Poggio and then turn west on SP50.
