Arezzo, Cortona, and Eastern Tuscany
Italy's National Parks
Parco Nazionale Casentino is one of Tuscany's finest "off the beaten path" experiences—the beautiful mountain scenery has been maintained and safeguarded by monks for eight centuries. It's also an example of Italy's burgeoning national parks system. There are currently 23 parks covering a total of around 1.5 million hectares (58,000 square mi), or about 5% of the country—more than twice as much as 30 years ago. And a new park is added or an existing park is expanded every few months. The trend is a boon for nature lovers, who can enjoy huge expanses of unspoiled territory.
