When to Go
Snow conditions for skiing vary drastically year to year -- there is nothing approaching the consistency of, say, the Rockies -- so keep apprised of weather conditions. Some years there's good snow beginning in November, while others don't see much more than a flake or two until February. The mountains to the north tend to shield the lowlands from the harshest winter weather, resulting in something resembling a Mediterranean climate. Spring starts early, fall lingers, and winter is mercifully short. Locals only complain about the steamy summers.
