Archaeological Site

Archaeological Site Review

Beyond the basilica and across the road, the archaeological site among the cypresses reveals Roman remains of the forum, houses, cemetery, and port. The little stream was once an important waterway extending to Grado. The area is well signposted. Unfortunately, many of the excavations of Roman Aquileia could not be left exposed because of the extremely high water table under the site and had to be reburied after archaeological studies had been conducted; nevertheless, what remains aboveground, along with the monuments in the archaeological museum, gives an idea of the grandeur of this ancient city.
