Basilica Santa Maria della Sanità
Basilica Santa Maria della Sanità Review
Dominican friars commissioned this baroque, Greek cross–shape basilica, replete with majolica-tile dome, in the early 17th century. The church contains a small museum of the era's Counter-Reformation art—the most flagrantly devotional school of Catholic art—and includes no less than five Luca Giordano altarpieces. Elsewhere, the richly decorated elevated presbytery, complete with double staircase, provides the only note of color in the gray-and-white decoration. This provides access to the noted Catacomba di San Gaudioso.
