By Air in Sicily

By Air

Sicily can be reached from all major international cities on flights connecting through Rome, Milan, or Naples on Alitalia. Meridiana, Air One, and Volare also connect Catania and Palermo to other cities all over Italy, and Alitalia operates periodic connections to Cagliari in Sardinia. There are also direct flights to Sicily from London on Meridiana and from Munich on Lufthansa. Note that domestic flights to and from Sicily, especially one-way flights, are much cheaper when purchased from travel agencies in Italy than internationally or through Web sites.

Planes to Palermo land at Aeroporto Falcone-Borsellino (named in memory of two anti-Mafia judges famously assassinated in 1992) in Punta Raisi, 32 km (19 mi) west of town. Catania's Aeroporto Fontanarossa, 5 km (3 mi) south of the city center, is the main airport on Sicily's eastern side.

Transfers

Prestia & Comandè buses run every half hour between Palermo's Punta Raisi airport and the city center (Piazza Castelnuovo and the central station); tickets cost EUR 4.80. Taxis charge around EUR 35 for the same 45-minute trip. To get directly to the train station, take the hourly train leaving from the airport, Trinacria Express, which takes 40 minutes and costs EUR 4.50. There are also less-frequent bus connections directly to and from Agrigento and Trapani on Sal and Segesta lines, respectively. Catania's Fontanarossa airport is served by Alibus, which leaves about every 20 minutes from the airport and the central train station, with stops at Piazza Stesicoro, on Via Etnea, at the Duomo, and so on. The journey takes around 25 minutes; tickets cost EUR 1. Taxis cost around EUR 20.
