The ancient Via Appia starts at Porta San Sebastiano and extends across the Italian Peninsula to the Adriatic. To the east lies the Via Appia Nuova, which starts in front of the basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano and cuts through miles of highly developed residential neighborhood to reach the Capannelle racetrack, Ciampino Airport, and points southeast. The Via Appia Antica, so called to distinguish it from the modern thoroughfare, leads past the landmark church of Domine Quo Vadis and walled gardens to the Catacombs -- notably the two most famous, the Catacombe di San Callisto and the Catacombe di San Sebastiano.
