By Car in Rome

By Car

Romans park wherever there is physically space, and double- and triple-parking is common. Parking spaces outlined in blue are paid by buying a ticket from a small gray machine, installed on the street nearby. Leave the ticket, showing the time up to which you've paid to park, visible on the dashboard. Parking spaces outlined in yellow are not parking spaces at all -- stay away to avoid being towed. If you rent a car in the city, make sure the rental desk gives you specific directions for getting out of town, and invest in a detailed city map (available at most newsstands).
