Trastevere and the Ghetto

Map of Trastevere and the Ghetto

The charming little island of the Tiber, the Isola Tiberina, with bridges on either side, links two of the city's most distinctive neighborhoods: the Jewish Ghetto on the Tiber's left bank and Trastevere across the river. Both were bustling neighborhoods even in the earliest Roman times. What was to become the Ghetto in the 1500s was at the edge of ancient Rome's river port and wholesale marketplace. Trastevere was the place where immigrants from the empire's eastern colonies lived, among them ancient Rome's large Jewish community, which moved across the Tiber during the Middle Ages. Despite creeping gentrification, the Ghetto still preserves the flavor of Old Rome and a sense of community revolving around Via Portico d'Ottavia and the nearby Synagogue.
