Bulgari

Jewelry / Accessories, Piazza di Spagna

Fodor's Review:

Bulgari is to Rome what Tiffany's is to New York and Cartier is to Paris. Every capital city has its great jeweler, and Bulgari is Rome's, with a list of customers that range from Queen Juliana of the Netherlands to Nicole Kidman (well, at least she donned one of their necklaces to the Oscars). In the middle of the 19th century, the great-grandfather of the current Bulgari brothers began working with silver in his native Greece. He later moved to Rome, where, with his son, he started perfecting a style that used Byzantine-style gold and cabochon precious stones. They moved to the Via Condotti in 1910. By the 1960s, prices had become so astronomical they made even Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton blanch, but if you gather your courage and step through the velvet-curtained door into the marble-pillared room, you could splurge on a Bulgari pen to sign your checks -- it will cost the same as a pair of top designer shoes.
