$, Italian, San Giovanni
Fodor's Review:
On the square next to San Giovanni in Laterano, this place has a large and faithful following and has fed generations of neighborhood families over the years. Everything about it says old-school Roman tratt -- the wood-beam ceilings and wood-paneled walls, hung with photos from past decades (dig those '70s duds and thick mustaches on the groovy diners!), paintings, and a random mish-mash of knickknacks that say this place has been here a long while. The food is as good as any trattoria might serve, sometimes better, and the service is warm and welcoming. Seafood seems to dominate, but carnivores are satisfied also. Try one of the pastas with seafood sauce -- fettuccine with scampi, or wide pappardelle noodles with a mixed seafood ragu. Seconds range from fresh grilled fish to a veal chop. And the prices here are of una volta (another time), as the most expensive thing on the menu, more or less, is 13 euros.
