Set between a municipal rose garden and Rome's famous Orange Garden, this friendly little hotel is right in the heart of the historic Aventine. It's also not far from the Temple to Mithras and the House of Aquila and Priscilla (where St. Peter touched down). The 17th-century facade has been so restored it almost looks modern—ditto for the inside, where guest rooms have standard modern decors. Half of them also have balconies, and set around an ancient cloister, they all make for islands of tranquillity. Pros: quiet location; walking distance to tourist attractions; complimentary Wi-Fi in rooms and public spaces. Cons: no elevator in the hotel; small showers; no tubs.

This hotel is dreadful and in desperate need of a renovation. We had to change rooms twice- the first time because there were bedbugs and the second time because the electricity stopped working in our room. Both issues were dismissed by the staff- no apologies or discounts were offered. This hotel really put a damper on our Roman vacation.
