So you'd prefer not to look at another plate of pasta for a good long time -- but still, you'd rather not hit the Hard Rock Cafe. Well, Duke's may be the ticket. It dubs itself a California-style restaurant and bar, although the California rolls have tuna and carrot in them and they've added a flourish of fresh mint leaves to the Caesar salad. The truth is, once you look at Duke's menu after a stretch of Italian-only bingeing, you may actually want it all. Perhaps a nice, juicy beef fillet, served as what Americans refer to as an entrée (that is, a main course with side dishes on the same plate, something difficult to come by in Italy). There's always the finishing touch of the molten chocolate cake, or even a nice warm apple pie served with gelato (well, we are in Rome, let's not forget). The decor is, in fact, Malibu-beachhouse-minimalist, the outdoor patio out back in the summer consummately SoCal chic. And up front, opening out onto the street, all the beautiful Pariolini (people from Parioli, read: plenty of unnatural blondes) are huddled around the bar, sipping frozen cocktails, the whir of blenders and the music blaring in the background. If you squint, you could really be in California.
