Catacombe di San Callisto

Fodor's Review:

Burial place of many popes of the 3rd century, this is the oldest and one of the most important and best-preserved underground cemeteries. One of the (English-speaking) friars who act as custodians of the catacomb will guide you through its crypts and galleries, some of which are adorned with early Christian frescoes. Watch out for any wrong turns here: this is a five-story-high catacomb!
