Religious Sites, Aventino
Fodor's Review:
The exterior of this church illustrates to perfection the Roman habit of building and rebuilding ancient sites, incorporating parts of existing buildings in new buildings, adding to them, and then adding to them again. The church stands on the site of a temple built around 250 BC; some of the temple's columns are visible to the right of the church as you face it, beside the remains of the medieval campanile, or bell tower. The facade, dating from the mid-16th century, is thought to have been designed by Giacomo della Porta, the architect who completed the dome of St. Peter's Basilica after Michelangelo's death.
