Fodor's Review:
This gate marked the beginning of the Via Ostiense, the city's vital overland link with the port city of Ostia, 16 km (10 mi) away. Porta San Paolo, one of some 13 gates in the Aurelian walls, defended Rome's vital market area, including the Emporium -- the riverside docks and warehouses through which supplies brought in by barge were funneled into the city.
