A 16th-century building encloses the Holy Steps, which tradition holds to be the staircase from Pilate's palace in Jerusalem, brought to Rome by St. Helena, mother of the emperor Constantine. Wood protects the 28 marble steps worn smooth by the knees of pilgrims through the centuries. There are two other staircases that you can ascend to see the Sancta Sanctorum, the private chapel of the popes. The chapel is richly decorated with well-preserved Cosmatesque mosaics and a famous painting of Jesus, claimed to have been painted by angels.
