Museums / Galleries, Castles / Palaces, San Giovanni
Fodor's Review:
The building flanking the basilica of San Giovanni was the popes' official residence until their exile to Avignon in the south of France in the 14th century. The current palace was built by Domenico Fontana in 1586. Still technically part of the Vatican, it now houses the offices of the Rome Diocese and the Vatican Historical Museum. On the (required) tour you'll see the historic Papal Apartment, with antique furnishings, medieval sculptures, and Renaissance tapestries, and the Sala della Conciliazione, with a magnificent 16th-century carved and painted wood ceiling.
