The medieval tower atop the building that stands at the junction of Via dei Portoghesi with Via dei Pianellari figures in a chapter in the lore of Old Rome. In the building, so the story goes, a pet monkey ran amok one day, seizing a baby and carrying it to the top of the tower. Here the crazed animal seemed about to dash the child to the street below. A crowd of neighbors and bystanders invoked the Madonna's intercession, and the monkey carefully descended, carrying the baby to safety. In gratitude, the father placed a statue of the Madonna on the tower, along with a vigil light, both of them still neighborhood landmarks. The building is not open to the public.
