Fodor's Review

At this restaurant on the less-traveled side of Viale Trastevere, diners get to enjoy an evening of historical interest alongside an excellent meal. The building itself was constructed on the site of a 12th-century Jewish synagogue, and the spot is rich with history—in fact, several ancient sculptures, now in the Vatican and Capitoline museums, were unearthed in the basement. The food ranges from the inventive (marinated duck salad with grapes, walnuts, and pomegranate seeds) to the traditional (spaghetti cacio e pepe) to the historical (an ancient recipe for braised pork shoulder with apples and leeks). The proud owner is happy to explain every dish on the menu, and offers a postdinner tour of the wine cellar—and the famed basement.
