Nino

$$-$$$, Italian, Piazza di Spagna

User Rating: ** 2.3

Fodor's Review:

A favorite among international journalists and fashionistas, Nino has been casting its spell for many decades and remains one of the most dependable restaurants in the historic center. Nino sticks to the classics, in food and adorbale decor (yellow walls, dark-wood paneling, a plethora of framed prints), as well as in its waiters (dapper old gentlemen in bow ties and white jackets) -- the ambience is both cultured and cozy. Much of what you find on the menu here, as well as at the antipasto table, are Roman staples with a Tuscan slant. To start, try a selection from the fine antipasto spread, or go for the Tuscan cured meats or warm crostini (toasts) spread with liver pâté. Move on to pappardelle al lepre (with a rich hare sauce) or the juicy grilled beef, another succulent delicacy from our Tuscan friends in the Val di Chiana, home of the prized Chianina beef herd. Simple sweets, such as castagnaccio, a chestnut dessert, are all worth the extra calories. Nino's location near Piazza di Spagna makes it an excellent choice for lunch after a morning of shopping.

Food mixed, service poor

Posted by NC_traveler from Charlotte on 11/17/06

My wife and I with another couple had dinner at Nino's several weeks ago on the recommendation of a friend in Rome. Perhaps we should have included her to obtain better service. We were promptly seated and then ignored by the staff for most of the evening. However, this appeared to be the fate of most tables around us also. The service we did received was rude. The quality of the food was inconsistent. Some dishes were quite good and others very mediocre. The experience was very poor compared to other meals and service received throughout Italy.

Terrible experience!

Dropped nearly $200 for 2 people here while on vacation and the service was deplorable and the food was satisfactory at best. I would never eat here again, especially after the waiter threw the dessert menu on our table merely mumbling "Dessert" as he walked away, not "would you be interested in some dessert" or anything of the kind that resembles good service.

Average food, inexcusable service.

Went here for my birthday, and pushed the boat out by ordering a $100 bottle of wine. Waiter came back with a much younger wine that the one listed on the menu. When I pointed this out to him, his attitude turned nasty and he returned one minute later and told me that that was the only one they had. Service went downhill from there. Food was average, and when we finally finished our entrees, the same waiter appeared, "threw" two menus on our table along with the word "desert!" and walked away. Even if I'd dropped $20 dollars in there, I'd have still expected to have been treated with respect. The fact that we paid $200 for dinner and were subjected to the most rude and disgusting behaviour I have ever seen in a restaurant, just adds insult to injury. Avoid. PS and yes, the locals are treated way better, as was clearly evident from our time there.
