$$, Italian, Campo de' Fiori
Fodor's Review:
Don't let the country-kitchen ambience fool you. At this little spot off Campo de' Fiori, the constantly changing selection of offbeat takes on Italian classics is a step beyond ordinary Roman fare. Many offer kudos to this establishment for being anti-establishment -- -the place is usually packed with diners who appreciate the adventuresome kitchen and the location near the ever-bustling Campo market (although you may overhear complaints about the often decidedly brusque service). Antipasti can be delicious, like a basic top-quality plate of prosciutto and buffalo-milk mozzarella, or an octopus salad on a puree of white beans (though it lacked salt), or tasteless, like a plate of overcooked asparagus that were no longer even green. Secondi like flavorful steaks with balsamic vinegar, and fish cooked al cartoccio (cooked in paper or foil) with herbs and vegetables remain simple but satisfying. But people really love this place for dishes like the Calabrian eggplant "meatballs" or the hearty spaghetti-of-sorts with sheep's milk cheese and sweet red onions.
