Atlante Star

$$-$$$$, Vatican

User Rating: *** 3.4

Fodor's Review:

The lush rooftop-terrace garden café and the Les Etoiles (the Stars) restaurant of this comfortable hotel near St. Peter's have a knockout view of the basilica and the rest of Rome. In a distinguished 19th-century building, the guest rooms are attractively decorated with striped silks and prints for an old-world atmosphere; many bathrooms have hot tubs. The friendly family management is attentive to guests' needs and takes pride in offering extra-virgin olive oil from its own trees in the country. A sister hotel, the Atlante Garden, just around the corner, has larger rooms at slightly lower rates. Just ask and the Atlante Star will pick you up at Fiumicino airport for free.

Cozy hotel

Posted by Lance from Miami on 8/18/06

We absolutely loved the hotel which allowed us to have a very pleasant stay in Rome. Great buffet breakfast in a lovely restaurant with a fantastic view over the Vatican city. Had a cozy and tidy room on the 4th floor with a nice view which was just waiting for us to relax in after a long day around town. Upon arrival at the airport we found the hotel staff waiting for us and had a smooth ride to the hotel all inclusive. Hopefully we will have the chance to return to Rome in the near future and will definitely stay here at the Atlante hotel.

Posted by Peter from Toronto, Canada on 7/26/06

Hotel was as advertised. Shuttle from airport was great (Rome taxi strike), view from restaurant was stunning, good breakfast, clean, friendly staff. Close to St Peter's and Piazza Navona. Rooms were clean and updated. Lovely hotel, liked it a lot and would stay there again.

Poor Value Hotel

Posted by Kathy from New York on 6/15/06

I am a travel agent. When we arrived at the sister hotel this past April (Atlante Garden), we were told they were having problems with their water. It turns out that they were simply overbooked. So they put us up at the Atlante Star. Rooms are very small, the bathrooms desparately need upgrading and the rooms are definately not worth 199 Euros a night that we paid. The only up side is that it is very close to the Vatican and their Etoile restaurant view and food were supurb.

Don't Stay There!

Posted by Monica from Florida on 5/29/06

I went to this hotel after reading Fodor's review about it. This was the most disappointing experience we had on our entire 2 month trip to Europe. It is a disgusting hotel, with a rude and snobbish staff. That hotel was probably luxurious when it opened, 40 years ago! It is in desperate need of renovations, everything is soooo OLD! The rooms were super small and had ancient old red wallpapered walls, the bathroom had a terrible shower curtain that kept flying all over the place and sticking to our wet bodies, it had slime growing all over the bath tub (see pictures at Trip Advisor's web site) ... I can't believe I found so many good reviews about this hotel, I would never go back again. Everybody talks about the view and it is nice but would you be willing to stay in a hotel with poor service and terrible rooms just because of a little view of the Vaticans roof? We had dinner there one night, the atmosphere was very nice but the food was so disappointing for a 5 star restaurant, my husband's veal was overcooked and my chicken was prepared with canned mushrooms, a total disrespect for a $300 dinner - I think is outrageous they can get away with that. Please think twice before going to this hotel!

Location, Staff, Location

My wife and I stayed at the Atlante Star before a 16 day Carnival Cruise. The Atlante Star is a charming hotel that truly represents a great Rome experience. The pickup at the airport was great and the views from the hotel are Fantastic! We watched sunrise on the Vatican every morning while enjoying a great breakfast. The hotel staff directed us to the sights and when to get in line. We listened and did not wait for any attraction in Rome, including the Vatican Musuem. The rooftop garden was closed, only drawback, the lobby bar was great. We will stay here again.
