Albergo del Sole al Pantheon

$$$-$$$$, Pantheon

Fodor's Review:

Grandly sited directly opposite the immortal portico of the Pantheon, this place is in the running as a candidate for the world's oldest hotel. Welcoming the great ever since it opened in 1467, it has hosted Frederick III, Ariosto, Cagliostro, and Pietro Mascagni (who came here to celebrate the opening night of his opera, Cavalleria Rusticana). Over the years, travelers have accepted the rather cramped quarters in exchange for the location on this historic square (and now the indignity of being perched next to a McDonalds). Needless to say, the hotel has been renovated many times over and most vestiges of the distant past are long gone. The good news is that the refurbishment has been done in high style: artfully placed columns, Rococo windows, Renaissance-style beds, high ceilings, and terra-cotta floors all lend a certain authenticity to your stay. Obviously, specify if you want a room with a view over the Pantheon; with it, you'll also get the din of the piazza's gorgeous café scene, but double-glaze windows work their magic.
