$, Italian, Campo de' Fiori
Fodor's Review:
Every neighborhood has at least one "old school" Roman trattoria and, for the Campo de' Fiori area, Da Sergio is it. The central location and friendly service make this a popular spot for refueling after several aperitivi in the nearby piazza (that is, if you're willing to wait for a table). Once you're seated, the red-and-white-check paper tablecovering, the bright lights, the '50s kitsch, and the stuffed boar's head on the wall remind you that you're smack in the middle of the genuine article. So please, if you must ask for a menu (the waiters generally recite the limited selection a voce, out loud), then try not to chuckle at the translations in English. Go for the delicious version of pasta all'amatriciana, or the generous helping of gnocchi with a tomato sauce and lots of Parmesan cheese, served, as tradition dictates, on Thursday. There's a nice selection of seasonal vegetable antipasti and contorni(side dishes), as well as high-quality beef, served in preparations ranging from straccetti con rughetta (thinly sliced sautéed beef with arugula) to a meaty fillet.
