Babington's Tea Rooms

Quick Bites, Piazza di Spagna

Fodor's Review:

On the left at the foot of the Spanish Steps is Babington's Tea Rooms, which has catered to the refined cravings of Anglo-Saxon travelers since its establishment by two genteel English ladies in 1896. The "Inglesi" had long been a mainstay of Grand Tour visitors to Rome so Anna Maria Babington found her "corner of England" a great sucess from the start. Inside, it is as charming as all get-out and you half expect to see Miss Lavish buttering a scone for Lucy Honeychurch, but it's not a budgeteer's cup of tea. At weekday lunches, you're likely to find yourself next to a Bulgari, Fendi, or Agnelli. During the winter months, the fireplace makes this place (closed Monday) molto cozy.

Pricey- but worth it

Posted by adamlegge from London, England on 3/5/07

If you want a cheap cup of coffee don't come to Rome- and if you want a cheap cup of tea don't come to Babington's. We've just spent a wonderful four days in Rome and we visited Babington's three times, loving every visit. Unlike the other review here we found the service absolutely faultless. The selection of tea is incredible and the quality exquisite. We're British- so maybe the experience meant more to us- but being able to enjoy a lovely high tea in such an evocative setting was thoroughly enjoyable. They have a menu outside and every guidebook mentions it's expensive so carping about price seems pointless. If you don't like it don't go. Personally I'd prefer to see a Babington's in every piazza rather than a Starbucks.

Terrible service, tea good but much too expensive

Posted by Robert from Denmark on 6/5/06

During our visit in Rome in May 2006 my wife decided to go for a cup of tea at Babington's while I was exploring Spanish steps. Caught by a torrent rain I went to the tea house and sat down at her table. Immediately the waiter appeared and tried to press me to order another 9 Euro worth cup of tea my wife already ordered the 20 euro wort tea and one small piece of cake). On my reply that I did not want any, I was commented at, something in a style of "not having respect for the waiters". The supervisor on duty said also that I have to order something, not just to occupy the space. The tea, I must say, was OK, but not worth the price. My advice is keep away from there, unless you enjoy rude waiters.
