Long known (and beloved) as the Pensione Suisse, this old standby of the budgeteer set recently got a makeover into hotel status (all rooms now enjoy their own bath). The biggest plus about this place is its address: the Via Gregoriana, the picturesque street that debouches into the top of the Spanish Steps and one of Rome's more fabled streets (the painter Ingres and the author Hans Christian Andersen used to live a few doors up the block). Set in a somewhat unprepossing apartment building, the hotel itself is sweet and serviceable, with rooms on an array of floors. If possible, opt for the ones facing the back -- blissfully quiet even though you're in the thick of things.
