The Palazzina di Caccia, in the town of Stupinigi, was built by Juvarra in 1729 as a hunting lodge for the house of Savoy. More like a sumptuous royal villa, its many wings, landscaped gardens, and surrounding forests give a clear idea of the level of style to which the Savoy were accustomed. This regal aspect was not lost on Paolina Buonaparte, who briefly held court here during her brother Napoléon's reign over Italy. Today the Palazzina houses the Museo d'Arte di Ammobiliamento (Museum of Decorative Arts), a vast collection of paintings and furniture gathered from numerous Savoy palaces in the area. At this writing, the museum was closed for extensive renovations, but will reopen at the end of 2008.
