A longtime landmark in the center of Courmayeur, the Royal rises high above the surrounding town. With wide terraces and wood paneling, it is the most elegant spot in town. The cheery rooms have plenty of amenities. The hotel's restaurant ($$$-$$$$) is renowned for its regional and national cuisine—the scaloppina alla valdostana (fillet of veal with cheese, wine, and nutmeg sauce) is excellent. Light lunches are served in the hotel bar. The heated outdoor pool, with its panoramic view, is a great place to relax after a day on the slopes. The hotel caters to longer stays with half- or full-board service. Pros: Central location on Courmayeur's main pedestrian street, panoramic views, heated outdoor pool. Cons: Standard rooms can be small, meal plan required, town center can be busy.
