Bus routes in Naples itself have improved greatly over recent years. The signs at bus stops now give clear indications of the routes, and there are also electronic signs telling you how long you can expect to wait for the next services (although, it has to be said, these aren't 100% reliable). There's a network of frequent routes that shuttle you efficiently among a few major junctions. These are the R1, which runs between Piazza Medaglie d'Oro in Vomero and Piazza Bovio (at the end of Corso Umberto near Piazza Municipio) by way of Via Toledo and Via Diaz; the R2, which runs between Piazza Garibaldi and Piazza Municipio; the R3, which runs between Piazza Municipio and Piazza Trieste e Trento and Mergellina; and the R4, which runs from Piazza Bovio and the Ospedale Cardarelli above Vomero by way of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale. Other useful buses include the C24, which takes you from Mergellina to Piazza Amedeo to Piazza Vittoria at the beginning of the Villa Comunale; the C25, which connects Piazza Bovio, Piazza Municipio, Via Santa Lucia, and Piazza Amedeo; the 140, which takes you from Via Santa Lucia to Posillipo by way of Piazza Sannazzaro; and the 152, which runs between Pozzuoli and Piazza Garibaldi, passing through Mergellina and also has an efficient all-night service if you get stuck somewhere). The tiny E1 is a handy way to get around the city center; it makes a loop from Piazza del Gesù Nuovo around the Museo Archeologico Nazionale and the duomo and back by way of Via Monteoliveto. Since transfers are free, a few mistakes won't deplete your bank account. For further information call ANM. Bus tickets are included on the popular Giranapoli pass. A pass costs EUR 1 and is valid for 90 minutes on all public transit within the city boundaries; EUR 3 buys a biglietto giornaliero (ticket for the whole day).
For the Phlegrean Fields, if coming directly from Naples, take the Cumana train for Baia from Montesanto in Naples to Lucrino, then cross the road to use the shuttle bus service run by SEPSA. If the bus is not there, walk back up the road toward Pozzuoli to the first bus stop, and board the first that passes. Ask the driver when to get off. For Cuma, stay on the Cumana train until you get to Fusaro, and then take the SEPSA Miseno-Cuma bus. Both Baia and Cuma are in transportation fascia 2 (EUR 1.70).
