Fodor's Review:

Caruso died here, Queen Sophia of Sweden stayed here, and Oscar Wilde and his lover Lord Alfred Douglas escaped here -- the Vesuvio has been a lodestone for Europe's elite ever since it opened its doors in the 1880s. Today, the great and good continue to arrive (Giorgio Armani and President Clinton are two recent guests) and for good reason. The hotel enjoys the ne plus ultra of locations: directly facing the medieval Castel dell'Ovo and the enchanting toy harbor of the Borgo Marinaro. Strikingly telescoping the centuries, a modern 1980s facade gives way to a lobby resplendent with Venetian chandeliers, 18th-century Neapolitan clocks, polished wood floors, Kirman carpets, and neoclassical armchairs. Upstairs, guest rooms are lullingly luxurious -- lined in terra-cotta, pistachio, or chestnut-hue brocades, fitted out with the largest beds (called King-size Matrimonial) imaginable and bathrooms as mirror-lined as they come, these chambers have all the creature comforts any CEO would expect (video messaging, etc.) Best of all are those balconies drinking in that incomparable vista. For the Cinerama version, repair to the rooftop Ristorante Caruso, where the food is legendary -- try the bucatini alla Caruso, which honors the tenor who called this hotel his Neapolitan home -- and the crowd camera-ready (recent spotting: Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, and children). Even a Campari tastes better thanks to that bay-side-spiced ozone. Add in a beauty spa and a Jaguar to pick you up at the airport and you'll know why many consider this the most impeccably stylish hotel in Naples. Occasional discounted Internet room rates are real steals.
