Al Grottino Review

This small and friendly family-run restaurant, which is in a 14th-century building handy to the Piazzetta, has arched ceilings and lots of atmosphere; autographed photos of famous customers cover the walls. House specialties are scialatielli ai fiori di zucchine e gambaretti (homemade pasta with zucchini flowers and shrimps) and linguine ai scampi, but the owner delights in taking his guests through the menu of regional dishes.

    Most Experienced Al Grottino Customer

I was surprised to read the comment by cynthster from Virginia regarding Al Grottino Restaurant. I have been acquainted with this charming restaurant since 1958 and have always been treated with the utmost courtesy. The owner and his father-in-law go out of their way to make guests comfortable and offer suggestions regarding the excellent cuisine. I have seen rude and obnoxious customers treated with respect even though they did not deserve it. I have not found Al Grottino's prices to be out of line with the rest of the restuarants on Capri and portions have always been quite substantial. Although I am not an avid fish eater, I have always found the fish at Al Grottino to be excellent and have never heard a complaint about any of the food. Yes, I am a satisfied customer and have always recommended Al Grottino to anyone I know who is going to Capri. Afterall, you are on vacation-did you expect it to be free?

Should Have Read the Reviews Before Going

We found the "owner" arrogant. Cover charge, for bread, was more than any other restaurant in the two wks we were in Italy. Glasses of house wine were exhorbitant. Plus, in addition to the 15% gratuity, there was an additional .68 euros, which, when we questioned, was "for the boss." Fish special was 14 euros and barely edible. Two Americans next to us cancelled the rest of their meal after having the fish and stated loudly as they walked out the door, "the fish was terrible."
