There are trains every hour between Rome and Naples. Alta Velocità, Eurostar, and Intercity, the fastest types of train service, make the trip in less than two hours. Almost all trains to Naples stop at Stazione Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi. 892021. www.trenitalia.it).

The efficient (though rundown) suburban Circumvesuviana (081/7722444. www.vesuviana.it) runs from Corso Garibaldi station and stops at Stazione Centrale before continuing to Herculaneum, Pompeii, and Sorrento. Travel time between Naples and Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana line is about 75 minutes.

As far as public transportation goes, the region is divided into travel zones depending on distance from Naples. A Fascia 2 ticket (EUR 1.70 for 120 minutes) takes in Herculaneum; Fascia 3 (EUR 2.30 for 140 minutes) includes Pompeii; and Fascia 5 (EUR 3.20 for 180 minutes) covers trips to Sorrento. If you're traveling from Naples to anywhere else in Campania, there's no need to buy a separate ticket for your subway, tram, or bus ride to the train station. Your train ticket covers the whole journey. Buy the ticket the day before, as some of the ticket types are hard to find.
